WHAT IS WOOD FIBER?
The wood fiber is obtained from the processing of all kind of woods through a mechanical-physical process of wood extrusion without chemicals.
The wood fiber is the only organic material that, whenever used in replacement of natural peat, helps reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
Peat has been used for a long time in substates and growing media mixes, but it must be outlined that peat bogs store carbon subtracted from the atmosphere over thousands of years: their excavation generates oxidation of carbon with release of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and CH4 (methane) into the atmosphere.
1ha of peat = 30t of CO2
Moreover, peat bogs excavation affects the delicate ecosystem of peat bogs.
For these reasons, many European countries have banned peat extraction safeguarding peat bogs as protected areas.
Peat bogs excavation is still admitted in a few Eastern Europe countries, and the extracted peat is transported by road to central and Southern Europe, thus generating a further negative environmental impact.
In order to face the problem of pollution connected to the use of peat in growing media blends, many European countries have banned the use of this material encouraging the use of alternative materials, among which wood fiber is the most sustainable.
Wood fiber can be locally produced and it is not subject neither to long-term transportation nor to seasonality, since the wood from which it derives is available all year round and so the user does not need to buy extra quantities to be stocked.
The wood fiber has been used in horticulture for over twenty years, but only in the last years it has been widely used thanks to an increasing sensibility toward the environment and to its technical features which make it a high quality product with optimal yield:
- Reduced density for lighter blends
- Optimization of drainage
- High porosity
- Stuctural stability in time
- Enhances root development
- Improves substrates’ reumettability
- Free from weeds
- Easy to handle and mix
- Side upon request
Wood Fiber is nowadays used with excellent results in:
- premium potting soils blends
- universal potting soils blends
- growing media blends
- hydroseeding
Growing test have shown that wood fiber is the best alternative to peat for its capability of environmental impact reduction and for being produced at “Zero-km”.
PROMECO PLANT
Promeco wood fiber production plant is the only one able to receive all kinds of wood and big sized material (from 30 to 150 mm) and with foreign materials as stones or plastics.
Promeco plant includes:
- FEEDSTOCK PRE-TREATMENT
- EXTRUSION
- REFINING OF THE OUTPUT PRODUCT
Extrusion is the hearth of the plant; it is a thermo-mechanical continuous process of fractioning and pressure of the material which generates temperatures higher than 125°C.
High temperatures destroy bacterial load and the seeding potential, but, above all, they generates the “steam explosion”: the water inside the material evaporates and the residual moisture is kept lower than the one of the fermentation stage, thus generating a stable product.
The plant can be completed by shredders and screens to refine the output product and there is the possibility to have different material blends by dosing the feedstock according to the client’s requests.
ADVANTAGES OF PROMECO PLANTS FOR WOOD FIBER PRODUCTION
- Operativity granted 24/24
- Fully automatized
- Reduced staff
- Average production: 25/40 m3 EN/hour of wood fiber
- Low management cost
- Low mainteinance costs
